1. I have archived much of my life through collected objects.
2. I have moved a smaller studio, making it necessary that I get rid of a lot of these objects.
3. I have done so by using them as the raw material for one enormous collage, created inside a 30-yard dumpster.
4. Oh, also, I have photographed around 500 of these objects and will display them here, accompanied by a brief history of each item.

VOLVO GEAR SHIFT

5.2 in diameter x 6.2 cm
This is the gear shift handle from my dream car: a 1986 cornflower blue Volvo 240 wagon. It was a four speed that had a push button overdrive, kind of like a fifth-gear (the square hole is where the button was). Much like the idea of a push-button fifth gear, everything else with car ultimately went cockamamie. It finally broke down for good one day on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. That was in 2007. I haven't owned a car since.

  1. When I moved to LA I bought a 1982 smoke grey volvo and it had a very similar knob on the gear shift. One day while I was pulling onto the freeway the knob came off in my hand making it impossible to go into overdrive (which is basically just 5th gear). I discovered that by touching two wires together, hotwire style, I could make the car shift in and out of 5th gear. I had the car 8 more months and shifted that way the entire time.
